Jumeirah Group plans to open a number of hotels in Brazil
Friday, December 4, 2009
Dubai's Jumeirah Group plans to open its first hotels in Brazil after witnessing the country's recent economic growth and the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games generate demand, according to a report.
James Erlacher, senior vice president of development for the Americas at the Dubai-based Jumeirah Group, said that the time is right now for them to be entering the Brazilian market, according to Bloomberg newswire reports. Jumeirah's priority is to operate hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's biggest cities, and it's also considering resorts "primarily in the northeast part of the country," Erlacher said.
Famed for its Four Seasons hotels, they expect to reach agreements with developers of three projects in the next 18 months, including hotels in Sao Paulo and Rio and a beach resort while the north-eastern part of the country may also be targeted, Alinio Azevedo, the chain’s director of development for South America and the Caribbean said in an interview. He added that the number one attraction for the group is to really understand the wealth creation that has happened in Brazil in the last eight to 10 years.
According to Tourism Minister, Luiz barreto, further strengthening of the Brazilian real, which has rallied 34 percent this year against the dollar, the most of any major currency, may drive away foreign visitors to Rio before it hosts the 2016 Olympics. The real's gains have been driven in part by investors buying stocks and bonds on prospects the country is among those emerging fastest from the global financial crisis. In more good news for Overseas property investors, Economists surveyed by the central bank predicted GDP will expand 0.2 percent this year and 5 percent in 2010, according to the median estimate.
Meanwhile, Brazil won an investment-grade rating from Moody's Investors Service putting it one level above high- yield or junk at all three major ratings companies. Moody’s cited Brazil’s "strong economic and financial resilience" during the worldwide slowdown.

Brazilian government relaxes its grip on air fares
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Brazilian tourism could get a major boost from the government's decision to eliminate the minimum international flight prices within the next year.
According to the Diário Oficial (Federal Daily Gazette), the country's National Agency of Civil Aviation (ANAC) authorized the granting of discounts of 20% on established minimum fares for international travel outside South America.
Currently all Brazilian air fares must respect a minimum price but once the decision is published in the Official Gazette air carriers will be able to offer 20% rebates on the current fares. Three months later the rebate will increase to 50%, and another three months later to 80%. Six months later minimum prices will disappear and companies will be able to offer whatever fares they wish.
The discounts will be applicable to a list of ANAC minimum or floor fares for flights to, Asia, Africa, North America, Central America, Europe and Oceania. Earlier, last year ANAC had applied a similar gradual system for flights to South American countries originating in Brazil, which culminated last September. Brazilian domestic flights were the first to benefit from the new fares system, which is contemplated in the ANAC creation Bill.
According to Marcelo Guaranys, ANAC's director, the real reduction of price will depend on the competition between the Airlines. "Where there's more market competition the reduction will be higher. So, we imagine that markets like the United States and some European destinations will have a reduction in the short term" he comments.

That could mean trekking through dense jungle or following well-marked trails". "This gives visitors a chance to really absorb the scenery and see the wildlife, plants and flowers that make the rainforest special," He added.

Brazilian ecotourism grows exponentially
Sunday, February 22, 2009
Adventure travel and Ecotourism are on the rise in Brazil and has become a popular alternative to traditional beach holidays due to the amazing Amazon.
According to the United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organization, which has stated that the attractiveness of Brazil is due to its "wealth of spectacular places to visit", such as the its overabundance of world heritage sites, including Igaucu national park and the Amazon Conservation Complex.
After the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian ecotourism began to grow exponentially and the country woke up to its eco-potential. According to official figures, 5 million ecotourists visit destinations like the Pantanal, the world's largest wetlands, and Abrolhos, a coastal whale-watching paradise. Ecotourism has generated $4.95 billion for the economy. The tourism industry in general grows by 3% a year, ecotourism is up by 15% and Bonito is experiencing 20-30% annual growth in its tourism trade.
Dorival Bruni, president of the non-profit Biosphere Society estimates that Ecotourism which is accounting for 15% of the travel industry, could make up as much as 50% by 2010.
Laura Rendell-Dunn, marketing manager for Journey Latin America, asserts that ecotourism is "very popular" among environmentally conscious holidaymakers.
She commented: "We all like to go on holiday but we also want to know that we are not causing damage. That is very much at the forefront of people's minds when they travel now."
The interest in cave tourism in Brazil also has grown quite a lot due to the technical enhancements developed at the conservation units of the country over the years. According to the Brazilian Cave Tourism Society, there about 2,800 registered caves and the institution acknowledges that the number is quite higher. From this total, 53 are considered as tourist sites.
Brazil has launched a two-step program to realize its ecotourism potential sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).The project began last year with a $13 million pilot program called Proecotur to prop up projects in the Amazon. $200 million countrywide program is planned to follow for the infrastructure improvements and to fund the private sector to develop specific attractions, accommodations, etc. Roberto Morao, president of the Brazilian Ecotourism Association (Ecobrasil) has said "Normally you ask for the money first and see how things work out later, But we're going to see how it works first and then move forward."
An ambitious Pantanal Project includes an ecotourism component was launched in conjunction with the IDB. Embratur, Brazilian tourism agency hired the Terra consultancy in partnership with private IEB to make a comprehensive study of potential ecotourism sites around the country. Nearly 88 different eco-poles have been identified and local governments are launching independent initiatives to improve infrastructure and promote travel in these poles.
The environment minister Carlos Minc has introduced new policies to tackle climate changes. He has said that the government is promoting sustainable tourism and it’s good for Brazil because it generates a lot of money for the local communities. The efforts stem to overseas buyers who are investing in property in Brazil as well, according to Mr Minc, who believes that they are being made aware of environmental concerns.

Brazil taps into Mexican market
Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Brazil's tourism institute has revealed that an increasing number of tourists are choosing to take their holidays in Brazil and the overall number of foreign arrivals during 2008 was likely to exceed the total recorded a year earlier.
Embratur has created a new body, The Discover Brazil to attract tourists from Mexico and the new promotional campaign will begin from June. This shows that government is taking efforts to market the country as a good holiday destination abroad. Tourism officials, Representatives of the four airlines that operate between the two countries, travel agents and diplomats met recently to decide on implementing the service in Mexico.
The promotional drive will be launched across various parts of Mexico to support the country as a tourist destination amongst the Mexican people. The campaign will benefit investors of rental accommodation in Brazil as the country's government is actively targeting the tourist sector and trying to attract overseas vacationers through various means.
Prices are still relatively cheap but with the stable economy property experts believe that there is a strong basis for property prices to catapult higher. Consequently, property investors who enter the market ahead of price appreciation could find their purchase is worth much more within short span of time.
